Cellular Playground

My piece Cellular Playground uses the molecular patterns, interactions, and reactions that take place during the process of cellular respiration as inspiration to create movement patterns and vocabulary. I explore themes from cellular processes like energy transferal, attaching and detaching, tension/release, cycles of movement, and the rearranging of particles to see how they translate from a microscopic space to a dance space. By using non-human entities as my inspiration, I am able to explore how the human body translates and adopts non-human movement, giving a rigidly prescribed and emotionless cellular process personality, texture, and sometimes narrative. As the dancers move through the structure set forth by our biology, they bring personality and humanity to the raw chemistry within our bodies.
