A Spell of breaking

This work explores different forms of feminine power through the lens of witchcraft. Five dancers portray a coven as they embody the power that comes from both their divinely beautiful side and their grotesquely ugly side. These witches move through a grounded, earthy, and confident movement vocabulary, centering repetition and circularity as they cast their spells. Inspired by the text of Heather Alexander's "Spell of Breaking," ancient pagan rituals celebrating the divine feminine, and the trending hashtag #YourBodyMyChoice, this work allows the audience to witness a group of women without fear. In a time riddled with feelings of powerlessness, we need to see people owning their magic to remind us that we can do the same.
